Bolted Structural Steel Fabrication and Erection
Bolted structural steel combines factory fabrication with designed bolted connections at the project site. ASAECO provides drawing review, component fabrication, delivery and erection services for building and industrial projects. Accurate hole positions, connection plates and erection sequencing are central to the process.
A fully bolted site connection arrangement does not mean that fabricated beams, columns or connection components contain no shop welds; the drawings define where each connection method is used.
Service scope
- Prepare and review shop drawings
- Fabricate beams, columns and bracing
- Produce connection plates and bolt holes
- Inspect components and apply specified finishes
- Coordinate staged delivery and bolted erection

Bolted structural steel connection details
Primary members include beams, columns and the lateral-resisting system. Connection plates, splices and stiffeners link those members in accordance with the structural design. Bolt grade, diameter and installation method must be specified. Bearing-type and slip-critical connections have different requirements, including the treatment of mating surfaces and installation verification. Details should address connection capacity as well as tool access and practical fit-up.
Coordinating these requirements before fabrication helps the installation team assemble the intended connections without improvising details on site.
Shop drawings and manufacturing accuracy
Shop drawings provide the basis for cutting, assembly, welding and hole production. Column grids, floor levels and openings should be coordinated before components enter production. Checks of hole spacing, plate dimensions and member geometry are important before coating and dispatch. Where appropriate, fit-up checks can identify mismatches between related parts. Site enlargement of holes or changes to plates require technical review and should not substitute for factory quality control.
Identifying each component against the erection drawings supports traceability through delivery, storage and installation.
Staged delivery and erection
For bolted structural steel, component marks and dispatch order should follow the erection plan. Foundation readiness, anchor bolt positions and crane access are checked before lifting begins. Temporary bracing and stability during incomplete stages require explicit planning. Bolts are installed and verified by the method specified for the connection; a single generic torque value is not appropriate for every bolt assembly.
Following erection, levels, alignment and connection condition are reviewed against the project requirements. Handover records should reflect the inspections agreed within the contract.
Cost and practical project benefits
Price depends on steel weight, section types, connection quantities, bolt specifications, hole production and protective finish. Erection speed also depends on component readiness, lifting access and the delivery sequence. Future disassembly or extension must be considered in the design rather than assumed available for every structure. Send structural drawings, material requirements, the site location and the required scope for fabrication, transport and erection.
Defining the same technical and commercial boundaries makes quotations more useful and helps identify exclusions before the work starts.
Frequently asked questions about bolted structural steel
Does fully bolted mean there are no welds?
No. Members and connection components may be welded in the workshop while the main site connections are bolted. The approved drawings define the fabrication and erection connection details.
Can the structure later be moved?
Potential reuse depends on the design, component condition, connection details and the new site requirements. An engineering assessment is needed before treating a bolted structure as suitable for relocation.
What is needed for a cost estimate?
Provide structural drawings, steel and bolt specifications, finish, location and programme. If only preliminary information is available, the estimate should state its assumptions and the information required for a firm quotation.
Request a bolted structural steel project review
Send the available drawings and specifications with the project location and required programme. The initial review identifies dimensions, quantities or tonnage, the design status and the services required. Where information is preliminary, the estimate should state its assumptions and identify the additional documents needed for a firm proposal.
The quotation for bolted structural steel should identify supplied items, site activities and the responsibilities for transport, installation and quality control. Confirm the current drawing revision and any order changes before fabrication starts. This helps align the production schedule with the actual project requirements and gives both parties a clear reference for reviewing the completed scope.
