Bearing bars carry panel loads to the supports, while cross members maintain spacing and assist panel integrity. The bearing direction therefore needs to be shown clearly on the layout. Panels with the same outside dimensions may have different capacities because bar depth, thickness, spacing and unsupported span differ. Pedestrian access, equipment movement and concentrated loads require different design inputs.

Supply the actual service conditions rather than choosing a panel only by its appearance or weight. The approved design should also address the permitted deflection.

Panel fabrication and inspection

Production follows the agreed dimensions, bar arrangement and edge details. Dimensional checks address panel size, spacing, flatness and the condition of fabricated connections. Pipe penetrations, equipment bases and other openings should be located before manufacturing, reducing avoidable cutting on site. For removable flooring, panel size and weight need to suit the planned lifting and maintenance arrangements.

Finishes, fixings and service conditions

For industrial steel grating, the specified material and protective finish must suit moisture, chemical exposure and cleaning practices.
