Steel Joists: Kromit Floor Joist Design and Production

Steel joists for Kromit floor systems are fabricated to suit the floor layout, spans and design loads. ASAECO reviews the project information and manufactures joists against the approved member and connection details. The design needs to consider the construction stage as well as the completed floor.

Unpropped installation is a design condition to be verified for the specific joist and site arrangement, rather than a blanket assumption for every span or order.

Service scope

  • Review floor framing plans and joist lengths
  • Define member specifications from the approved design
  • Cut and assemble joist components
  • Weld and inspect dimensions and connections
  • Identify and deliver components against the floor schedule

Design information for steel joists

Clear span, joist spacing, infill type, concrete depth and the floor loads are essential inputs. Partition locations, openings, cantilevers and equipment loads should be identified on the drawings. Bottom chords, top chords and web members are selected to meet the design requirements. Equal joist lengths do not necessarily imply equal member sizes because spacing and loading may differ.

Supply the structural drawings together with current architectural changes so the proposed joists can be coordinated with the actual floor arrangement before production is released.

Manufacturing and inspection

Once the specifications are approved, components are prepared and assembled to the required geometry. Checks address overall length, web arrangement, chord alignment and end details. Weld quality depends on the joint preparation, welding process and the inspection requirements defined for the work. Additional weld metal does not compensate for incorrect detailing. Joists should remain identifiable during delivery so their type and length can be matched to the installation drawing.

Storage supports, lifting arrangements and transport restraints should also protect the components from damage or unintended distortion.

Coordination with floor construction

Before placing steel joists, the site team should confirm the supporting dimensions against the drawings. Cutting members, relocating openings or introducing new loads requires a design review. Concrete placement, construction loads and any temporary supports should follow the agreed execution requirements. Once positioned, end connections and the other floor components need checking against the approved details.

Coordination between fabrication and the site team reduces the risk of incorrect lengths, mismatched supports and late changes. Each floor’s delivery sequence should reflect the actual installation programme.

Pricing and production quantities

The cost of steel joists depends on total scheduled lengths, designed member weights, the number of types, fabrication details and transport. A price per metre is only comparable when the span and member specification are equivalent. Send the framing plan, length schedule, floor system and project location for review. If drawings are preliminary, the estimate should identify the assumptions and distinguish them from a final quotation.

The number of floors and required delivery stages also influence production planning and help avoid supplying components before adequate storage or installation space is available.

Frequently asked questions about steel joists

Are Kromit joists always installed without props?

The construction-stage design must verify the required support arrangement, including the fresh concrete loads. Any need for props or temporary supports should follow the approved design and installation conditions.

Can quantities be calculated from floor area alone?

Floor area can support an early estimate, but final steel quantities depend on spans, spacing, loads and designed sections. A joist layout and length schedule provide a more reliable basis for ordering.

When should the manufacturing order be released?

Release the order after confirming spans, openings and support details. Notify the manufacturer of architectural or structural changes before production so the supplied components match the current drawings.

Request a steel joists project review

Send the available drawings and specifications with the project location and required programme. The initial review identifies dimensions, quantities or tonnage, the design status and the services required. Where information is preliminary, the estimate should state its assumptions and identify the additional documents needed for a firm proposal.

The quotation for steel joists should identify supplied items, site activities and the responsibilities for transport, installation and quality control. Confirm the current drawing revision and any order changes before fabrication starts. This helps align the production schedule with the actual project requirements and gives both parties a clear reference for reviewing the completed scope.
