Steel Storage Tanks: Design, Fabrication and Installation

Steel storage tanks must be specified for the stored liquid, operating conditions and installation environment. ASAECO reviews and delivers tank fabrication and installation projects against approved drawings and technical requirements. Both ground-supported and elevated arrangements can be considered within the agreed scope. A capacity figure alone does not define a tank: pressure, temperature, material, connections, internal finish and support conditions are also necessary for a meaningful design review and quotation.

Service scope

  • Review capacity, contents and operating conditions
  • Detail shell, base, roof and connections
  • Fabricate and assemble tank components
  • Inspect welds and perform specified testing
  • Prepare surfaces and coordinate delivery and installation

Specifying steel storage tanks

An enquiry should state the stored liquid, working capacity, preferred dimensions and installation location. Operating pressure, temperature, filling cycles and corrosion conditions also matter. An atmospheric storage tank and a pressure vessel require different design and testing approaches. The design basis, plate thickness and material must therefore be selected for the actual service conditions. Potable water and food applications introduce further requirements for materials and internal coatings.

Define the required accessories and maintenance access at the same stage to prevent late changes to the fabrication details.

Ground-supported and elevated arrangements

Ground-supported tanks require suitable foundations, bearing conditions and access around the installation. Elevated tanks also need a supporting structure, bracing and foundation connections appropriate to the site. Height, wind exposure and seismic requirements influence that structural assessment. Ladders, access platforms, inspection openings and instrumentation should be coordinated with the operator’s needs. The lifting method and space available for installation are important practical inputs.

For a constrained location, splitting the work into transported components and site assembly may be considered during planning.

Fabrication, welding and inspection

Cutting, forming, assembly and welding follow the approved shop drawings. The fabrication sequence should allow the tank geometry and dimensions to be checked throughout production. Weld inspection methods and coverage belong in the agreed inspection plan. Leak testing, hydrostatic testing or other examinations are selected according to the tank type and approved specification; a single test procedure cannot be assumed suitable for every tank.

The required inspection records and handover documents are defined in the contract scope so the completed work can be assessed against clear acceptance criteria.

Pricing, coatings and delivery

The price of steel storage tanks depends on capacity, weight, plate material, connections, protective finish and testing requirements. Factory assembly or site erection is influenced by tank dimensions and transport restrictions. Nozzles, access openings, platforms and support steelwork should be identified in the bill of scope. Internal coatings must be compatible with the stored contents, while external finishes address the surrounding environment.

Comparing quotations requires equivalent supply boundaries for accessories, transport, erection and inspection. ASAECO reviews these details before providing a project-specific estimate.

Frequently asked questions about steel storage tanks

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the stored liquid, working capacity, pressure, temperature, dimensions, location and finish requirements. Drawings showing nozzles, openings and access arrangements help define the scope and identify transport constraints.

Is every storage tank a pressure vessel?

No. The operating pressure and any vacuum conditions must be specified. Atmospheric tanks and pressure vessels follow different requirements, which need confirmation before design, fabrication or testing begins.

Can a tank be assembled on site?

Site assembly may be reviewed for large tanks or restricted transport routes. Working space, lifting access, welding conditions and the inspection plan influence whether that arrangement is appropriate.

Request a steel storage tanks project review

Send the available drawings and specifications with the project location and required programme. The initial review identifies dimensions, quantities or tonnage, the design status and the services required. Where information is preliminary, the estimate should state its assumptions and identify the additional documents needed for a firm proposal.

The quotation for steel storage tanks should identify supplied items, site activities and the responsibilities for transport, installation and quality control. Confirm the current drawing revision and any order changes before fabrication starts. This helps align the production schedule with the actual project requirements and gives both parties a clear reference for reviewing the completed scope.
